2011 Information and Recap

Maryland won the 2011 Capital Cup for the third year in a row.  Maryland defeated Virginia 14 1/2 to 9 1/2.  Even with very difficult condition over the weekend both teams performed extremely well.  John Mlynarski, PGA from Harbourtowne Resort in St. Michaels, Maryland named Ty Herriott (Brandywine, MD) the MVP for Team Maryland.  Herriott's record was 3-0 defeating Alex O'Dell in the Sunday singles matches 6&4.

On friday for the practice rounds the course saw over 2 inches of rain making conditions hard but the work of Country Club at Woodmore's crew made the course look and play great.  The first day was delayed 30 minutes due to debris on the course but after Saturday morning the score was a tie (3-3).

Saturday afternoon matches started out with a bang.  Both states had teams go up big in a couple matches but in the end it saw Maryland take three matches,  halving in two, and losing in one the end of day one saw Maryland with a 7 1/2 to 4/1/2 advantage.  On Saturday night the players and parents were greeted with a special presentation by David Hutsell, PGA.  David won the 2011 Professional National Championship, 2011 Marland Open, and 2011 MAPGA Professional Championship.  He also played in the 2010 and 2011 PGA Championship.

With Virginia being down big going into Sunday their team rallied behing team Captain Josh Tremblay, PGA.  Josh gave them a good speech to sleep on and it showed Sunday morning.  Team Virginia jumped on the Maryland team early and gave them all they could handle.  In the end though Maryland was to tough and Virginia was a little to far behind.  Maryland closed out the cup with the third to last match on the course.  Matthew Trasatti (Annapolis, MD) defeated PJ Leonard (Haymarket, VA) 3 & 2.

A special thanks to our sponsors again this year.  Gear for Sports was the shirt and hat sponsor for Team Maryland.  TaylorMade Adidas was the shirt and hat sponsor for Team Virginia. Titleist was the official ball being used at the Captial cup, and PING gave away bags for the winning team.

The MAPGA will be conducting the 3rd Annual Capital Cup. This event will be a two-day Ryder cup style format (Maryland vs. Virginia) with the best juniors competing from each state.   Below are some of the details:
