TEAM of BALCKEN and MILLER of CATTAIL CREEK COUNTRY CLUB WIN MIDDLE ATLANTIC PRO-SCRATCH; SULLIVAN and BRIGGS WIN PGA PROFESSIONAL DIVISIONS
Owings Mills, Md. – PGA Apprentice Nicholas Balcken and his amateur partner Brad Miller of Cattail Creek CC (Glenwood, Md.) won the team title at the MAPGA’s Pro-Scratch Championship which was held at Green Spring Valley Hunt Club on Monday June 18, 2012. They shot a fantastic score of 9-under par (63) which consisted of 10 birdies and one bogey. In golf terms, Balcken and Miller’s round was a real “ham and egg” effort. Miller contributed six birdies and Balken contributed the other four against one lone bogey.
Winning the Professional “Regular” Division was Chip Sullivan, PGA Head Professional of Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem, Va. who made three birdies and one bogey to score a 2-under par 70. This event was a little warm-up for Sullivan as he travels this week to Seaside, Ca. where he will play in the 45th PGA Professional National Championship (PNC) which will be contested on the Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Courses on June 25-27, 2012. As the 2007 PGA PNC Champion, Sullivan is looking forward to the competition and thanks his staff at Hanging Rock for being his biggest fans. “They always nudge me and say ‘Did you practice today?’ and make sure that I spent time focusing on my preparations,” said Sullivan.
In the Professional “Senior” Division, the title went to Charlie Briggs, PGA Director of Golf at Burning Tree Club (Bethesda, Md.). Briggs shot a steady even par score of 72 which gave him a one stroke victory over fellow PGA Professional Dean Sumner, Head Golf Professional at Quinton Oaks Golf Course in Callao, Va.
